The Cavern continues to celebrate its 60th anniversary with a year of new music and new festivals – including our first Ukulele Festival, which attracted 130 ‘uke’ players to Mathew Street. Not only was a good time had by all, but the event in the Live Lounge also raised more than £700 for one of our partner charities, BBC Children in Need too.

The Cavern teamed up with colleagues at the Beatles Story, and other city ambassadors, recently on a special trip to Hamburg. John Lennon always said that he was ‘born in Liverpool but grew up in Hamburg’, and the Beatles famously honed their playing over hundreds of hours on stage in the clubs. Find out all about our trip through the Beatles Story Blog here.

The Beatles’ first manager, Allan Williams, sadly passed away at the end of December, and to pay tribute to the great man himself, the Cavern held a special musical tribute night on what would have been his 87th birthday. The evening featured appearances from Cavern resident artists like the Cavern Club Beatles, and was followed by a ‘Cave Dweller’ jam session featuring guest musicians who wanted to pay their own tribute to Allan. The Shakers, Mike Byrne & The Sunrockers and The Amazing Kappa Band all appeared, and the tribute also raised more than £1,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The Cavern isn’t the only Liverpool musical institution celebrating this year. Sound City turns 10 this May, and we’re joining their party. We’re sponsoring the Cavern Stage, where the best emerging talent from across the UK and beyond will be showcased at the start of the late May Bank Holiday weekend.
Superstars Kings of Leon may have been in Liverpool to play to thousands of fans at the ECHO arena in February, but it seems the Tennessee rockers had their own fan moment themselves during their stay in the city. The BRIT and Grammy Award-winners from Nashville took time out from preparing for their gig to pop in to the Cavern. Not only that, but they also joined the Magical Mystery Tour for a trip around all the city’s Beatles sites. Drummer Nathan even tweeted a picture of the waterfront Beatles statues donated to the city by Cavern City Tours.

60 Years of Lennon/McCartney at St. Peter’s Church!

This year doesn’t just mark the 60th anniversary of the Cavern. It’s also 60 years since a teenage John Lennon and Paul McCartney were introduced at St Peter’s Church Fete. Now that seminal moment in modern music history is being marked on the day itself, July 6, with a recreation of the Woolton fete, including the Quarrymen’s journey on the back of a flatbed lorry and the Grand Dance at the Church Hall. The Day John Met Paul is a community collaboration with St Peter’s Church and Bishop Martin School, where the original fete took place.
